California Settles Lawsuit Over Police K-9 Attack for $1 Million

A woman whose scalp was torn off by a police dog during an arrest will receive nearly $1 million from the city of Brentwood.

Talmika Bates, suspected of shoplifting, was attacked by a police K-9 while hiding in bushes in February 2020.
The attack resulted in Bates needing over 200 stitches and being diagnosed with mild traumatic brain injury and PTSD.
The city of Brentwood agreed to a $967,000 settlement to avoid further litigation and appeal costs.
A federal judge had previously ruled that the prolonged attack could be considered excessive force, stripping the officer of some qualified immunity.
Brentwood Police Chief stated that the department no longer has active K-9 officers.
