Overview

  • Cal Fire canceled the state licenses of Devastating Pyrotechnics and Blackstar Fireworks following the July 1 Esparto warehouse explosion that killed seven workers.
  • Officials cited failures to file importation documents, unreported lost fireworks, and possession of fireworks without a required local permit.
  • The licenses held by owners Kenneth Chee and Craig Cutright, which were suspended in mid-July, have now been revoked.
  • While the license action closes the administrative matter, a multiagency post-blast criminal investigation remains active.
  • Cal Fire is forming a task force to tighten fireworks oversight as Yolo County proceeds with environmental review under a local health emergency.
