California Reports Zero-Emission Trucks Reach Nearly One-Quarter of New Sales Two Years Early

Record voucher requests point to accelerating fleet turnover.

Overview

  • Manufacturers told the state they sold 30,026 zero-emission medium- and heavy-duty vehicles in 2024, nearly one in four new trucks, according to the governor citing CARB data.
  • Sales of 2024 models doubled the minimum target, and Californians have purchased more than 57,000 clean trucks since 2021, the governor’s office said.
  • California’s HVIP incentive program reported a 177% year-over-year participation jump, with $200 million requested on the first day applications opened.
  • In February, more than 200 HVIP-funded vehicles entered service with the help of $31 million in incentives, indicating continued momentum this year.
  • CARB’s chair said growing sales show manufacturers are meeting clean-air goals and that zero-emission technology is ready for wider deployment, as state officials press ahead despite federal pullbacks and the Chronicle’s report of a 21% drop in new Tesla sales and a 3% dip in overall ZEV commerce in early 2025.
