California Prop 50 Special Election Reaches Registration Deadline as Officials Urge Early Ballot Returns

The measure would replace the citizen map with legislature-drawn districts through 2030, a shift analysts say could influence control of the U.S. House.

Overview

  • Monday, Oct. 20 is the last day to register online by 11:59 p.m., with same-day registration available at vote centers or county elections offices through Election Day.
  • All active registered voters were mailed ballots beginning Oct. 6, and official drop boxes opened Oct. 7 across the state.
  • Early in-person voting starts Oct. 25 at vote centers, which will be open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Nov. 4 and accept any county voter.
  • Mail ballots must be postmarked by Nov. 4 and received by Nov. 12, and state officials urge early return or use of drop boxes because some mail may be postmarked a day late.
  • Voters can track delivery and acceptance with the state’s “My Voter Status” and “Where’s My Ballot?” tools or request help from county elections offices, with results due Dec. 4 for counties and statewide certification expected Dec. 12.
