Californians can now buy the overdose reversal nasal spray naloxone directly from the state, Gavin Newsom announced Monday.

Overview

  • Governor Gavin Newsom announced that naloxone, an opioid overdose reversal drug, is now available to all California residents at a discounted rate of $24 for a two-pack.
  • The CalRx program, launched to lower prescription drug costs, negotiated the reduced price with Amneal Pharmaceuticals in 2023.
  • Previously, only government entities and businesses could access naloxone at the discounted rate; individuals can now purchase it directly online, with added tax and shipping fees.
  • California has distributed over 6 million naloxone kits since 2018, reversing approximately 355,000 overdoses, as part of its broader $1 billion effort to combat the opioid crisis.
  • The state has allocated $150 million from opioid settlement funds to support naloxone distribution through 2027, while legal and political scrutiny over the Amneal contract continues.
