California Online Voter Registration Window Closes Tonight

Failing to register online tonight shifts voters to in-person conditional registration.

Overview

  • The online and mail registration window closed Monday, Oct. 19 at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time, after which eligible Californians must register in person to vote the same day.
  • Completing the online form required a date of birth, a California driver’s license or ID number and the last four digits of a Social Security number, with alternative options for those who lack that information.
  • Voters who miss the deadline can use conditional (same-day) registration in person at county elections offices or at authorized vote centers starting Oct. 20 and continuing through Election Day, and ballots are counted after verification of the new registration.
  • Officials have mailed more than 23 million ballots statewide with just over 1.3 million returned, and changes to some USPS evening pickups have led election offices to urge returning ballots early or using official drop boxes or vote centers.
  • Under the Voter’s Choice Act, participating counties will open early vote centers on Oct. 24 with more locations by Oct. 31, expanding options for in-person voting and conditional registration ahead of Nov. 3.
