California Officer Fatally Shoots Attacker in Knife Ambush

A Santa Monica police officer was seriously wounded in an unprovoked knife attack before shooting the assailant, who died at the scene.

The incident occurred outside the Santa Monica Police Department around 5:20 p.m. on Saturday.
The attacker, a man in his 30s, approached the officer while he was speaking to a resident.
Without warning, the man pulled a knife and stabbed the officer, prompting the officer to shoot him.
Emergency medical aid was provided, but the attacker was pronounced dead at the scene.
The officer was hospitalized with serious injuries but is expected to recover at home.
