California Launches DROP, a One-Stop Data-Deletion Tool for Residents

Deletions by registered data brokers begin August 1, 2026.

Overview

  • DROP went live on January 1, 2026, allowing Californians to request that data brokers delete or stop selling their personal information.
  • Residents can use privacy.ca.gov to verify California residency and submit a single request by providing basic details such as name, address, and email.
  • More than 500 registered data brokers will receive these requests, and coverage applies only to brokers that are registered with the state.
  • Brokers must start processing requests on August 1, 2026 and delete applicable data within 90 days, with ongoing deletions occurring every 45 days thereafter.
  • Users may submit on behalf of a child or relative, and verification occurs through the California Identity Gateway or Login.gov with data stored securely for the request.
