California Launches DROP, a One-Stop Data-Broker Deletion Tool

Processing begins August 1 with deletions due within 90 days.

Overview

  • The state-run DROP site went live on January 1, letting Californians submit a single deletion or opt-out request to about 500 registered data brokers.
  • Users must verify California residency, create a profile, and provide basic personal details before requests are sent.
  • Data brokers are not required to act on DROP submissions until August 1, 2026, after which they must delete designated data within 90 days and perform ongoing deletions at least every 45 days.
  • DROP implements the 2023 Delete Act and is described by California officials as the first government-operated tool of its kind.
  • Officials say limiting broker sales should cut unwanted texts, calls, and emails from an opaque industry that trades in detailed personal data.
