California K-9 Teams Begin 14-Day Search in Central Texas Flood Zone

Fire Capt. Celina Serrano says Prentiss is trained to locate human remains in support of efforts to account for roughly 160 people still missing

  • The California Office of Emergency Services activated the Los Angeles County Fire Department’s canine units on Tuesday under a mutual aid agreement with Texas authorities.
  • Fire Capt. Celina Serrano and Firefighter Paramedic Jonathan Munguia lead teams partnered with dogs Prentiss and Clifford on the 14-day deployment.
  • Serrano said Prentiss’s specialized training will focus the unit’s work on recovering human remains from flood-ravaged areas.
  • A pair of canine teams from the Orange County Fire Authority also departed from LAX Wednesday to bolster ongoing search-and-recovery operations.
  • The July 4 weekend floods in central Texas killed at least 102 people, including 27 campers and counselors from Camp Mystic, and have left about 160 people unaccounted for.
