California Greenhouse Gas Emissions Drop 2.4% in 2022

State regulators attribute the decline to increased use of clean fuels and zero-emission vehicles.

  • The California Air Resources Board reported a reduction of 9.3 million metric tons of greenhouse gases in 2022.
  • Transportation sector saw the largest decrease, with emissions falling by 5.2 million metric tons due to more electric vehicles and biofuels.
  • Industrial emissions dropped by 1.5 million metric tons, driven by changes in oil and gas production.
  • Despite the progress, California's emissions reductions are not on pace to meet 2030 climate targets.
  • Renewable energy sources now account for around 50% of California's electricity, contributing to a 2.6 million metric ton drop in electricity sector emissions.
