Californians can now buy the overdose reversal nasal spray naloxone directly from the state, Gavin Newsom announced Monday.

Overview

  • California residents can now directly purchase naloxone nasal spray through the CalRx program for $24 per two-pack, approximately half the market price.
  • This expansion marks a shift from institutional-only access to individual consumer availability, enhancing accessibility statewide.
  • The CalRx initiative, funded by $150 million in opioid settlement dollars, has distributed over 6 million naloxone kits since 2018, reversing 355,000 overdoses.
  • Preliminary data shows a decline in synthetic opioid overdose deaths in 2024, the first such decrease since 2018, attributed to comprehensive intervention efforts including naloxone distribution.
  • While naloxone access progresses, the CalRx insulin manufacturing project remains delayed, with no set timeline for rollout.
