Overview
- CHP received multiple 6:25 a.m. reports of a gold Nissan driving recklessly through Vallejo and involved in collisions before the vehicle stopped near Highway 4.
- Around 7:17 a.m., an off-duty Richmond detective in an unmarked car activated emergency lights and approached a man reportedly striking vehicles with a metal object, and an altercation ended with the detective firing.
- The man was transported to a local trauma center where he died, and the detective was treated at a hospital for minor injuries.
- Richmond police said the detective was out of uniform and not wearing a body camera, and the Alameda County coroner was called to the scene just before 10:30 a.m.
- All westbound lanes of I-80 near Richmond Parkway were shut for hours with a SigAlert and detours at the Hercules exit, and investigators are seeking witnesses through the California DOJ at 916-210-2871.
