California DMV to Reissue 325,000 Real IDs After 2006 Software Error

Notifications will go out over the coming weeks with expedited, no-cost replacements for credentials affected by legacy coding that set incorrect expiration dates.

Overview

  • A proactive review found a 2006 software configuration that applied standard renewal intervals instead of matching a Real ID’s expiration to the holder’s authorized stay.
  • About 325,000 people—roughly 1.5% of California Real ID holders—are affected, primarily lawful noncitizen residents such as green card and visa holders.
  • The DMV has begun contacting impacted individuals and will expedite reissuance at no charge, warning it will not call, text, or email to request personal information or payment.
  • Officials said all Real IDs were issued only after federal verification of lawful presence, none were issued to undocumented individuals, and voter registration safeguards remained in place.
  • The agency says new safeguards are now implemented, as full federal Real ID enforcement for domestic air travel and some federal facilities has been in effect since May 2025.
