California Couple Convicted of Felony Child Abuse for Naturopathic Starvation of Infant

Sentencing is set for July 25 after prosecutors concluded that extreme alternative health beliefs caused the child's irreversible injuries.

  • John Andres Gonzalez and Jaqueline Navarro were found guilty of felony child abuse with a great bodily injury enhancement and face up to 12 years in prison.
  • Prosecutors said the couple, identifying as vegan mucus-free fruitarians and naturopaths, rejected breast milk and formula and subjected the baby to high-temperature saunas and ice baths.
  • In August 2020 emergency doctors at Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach found the ten-month-old gray, emaciated and catatonic with hypoxia, constant seizures and extremely low blood sugar.
