California Begins Issuing Redesigned Driver’s Licenses With Digital Barcode Signature

Customers do not need to replace current cards before they expire.

Overview

  • The DMV started rolling out the new driver’s licenses and identification cards on Oct. 1, 2025.
  • A cryptographic security signature is embedded in one of the two back barcodes, placing California among the first states to use this feature.
  • The cards no longer include a magnetic stripe on the back.
  • The updated design highlights California’s redwoods, golden poppies, and coastline.
  • Fees remain $45 for a driver’s license and $39 for an ID card, and the DMV urges customers to use online services for renewals and other transactions.
