Calgary Resumes Tap Water Fluoridation After Four-Year Delay

Calgary installed $28 million in treatment-plant upgrades to restore fluoride levels to 0.7 mg/L ahead of a July 9 injunction hearing

Downtown Calgary and the Bow River are seen from the air on Wednesday, May 31, 2023.
Calgary's drinking water is once again being fluoridated as of June 30, 2025, almost four years after a public vote backed the additive's return to the city's water supply.

Overview

  • The restoration fulfills the 2021 plebiscite in which 62 percent of Calgarians supported returning fluoride to tap water.
  • The city financed $28 million in capital upgrades and will cover $1 million in annual operating costs through water rates.
  • The Public Health Agency of Canada and Alberta Health Services endorse fluoridation at 0.7 mg/L as a safe, cost-effective cavity prevention measure.
  • Opponents have filed an injunction led by Safe Water Calgary to halt the fluoridation program.
  • University of Calgary research found higher tooth decay rates among Calgary children compared to those in fluoridated Edmonton.
