Calgary Officials Demand Air-Quality Data as Ecco Recycling Landfill Fire Burns

Releasing preliminary air data with clear health guidance will help residents limit smoke exposure.

Overview

  • A smouldering fire at the Ecco Recycling landfill in southeast Calgary continues to produce smoke that has drifted into nearby neighbourhoods while crews work around the clock to reach buried hotspots.
  • Firefighters and industrial crews are using water, soil smothering and heavy equipment to access and extinguish deep burns that can persist for an extended period.
  • The city has issued a health advisory for people downwind of the site and directs anyone with health concerns to contact Alberta Health Services Health Link.
  • Mayor Jeromy Farkas and Ward 11 Coun. Rob Ward formally asked the provincial environment minister to immediately release all available monitoring results, including pollutants measured, monitoring locations, peak readings and any guideline exceedances plus a plain-language health assessment.
  • The minister’s office says it will publish air-quality monitoring data as soon as possible while lab validation and ongoing sampling continue, and residents say preliminary results with qualifications are needed so they can make short-term decisions about outdoor activity and health care.
