Calcutta High Court Bars Nabanna Protest, Allows Conditional Sit-In at Mandirtala

The judge cited security at the secretariat in directing the demonstration to a nearby site.

Overview

  • The Single Bench permitted Suvendu Adhikari and BJP MLAs to hold a sit-in at Mandirtala bus stand on January 16 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.
  • The court capped participation at 50 MLAs and prohibited inciteful or abusive speech as part of conditions for the event.
  • Microphones are barred, the stage cannot exceed 12 feet by 15 feet, and traffic and public access must not be obstructed.
  • Participants must disperse within two hours after the event and restore the site within 24 hours, with volunteer details to be shared with police.
  • The order followed a plea after police denied a Nabanna protest due to high-security restrictions, and the BJP says it will approach a division bench to challenge aspects of the ruling.
