Calcutta HC Orders Jadavpur University to Lock Hostels for Puja Break, Police to Inspect Within 48 Hours

A high-level review at Nabanna will later set the university's lasting security plan.

Overview

  • The division bench of Justices Sujoy Paul and Smita Das De directed that all JU hostels be closed for the Durga Puja vacation within 48 hours.
  • The Acting Registrar and Pro‑Vice Chancellor must ensure every hostel is locked, after which the Jadavpur police officer‑in‑charge will inspect each hostel and submit a report to the court on locks and occupancy.
  • The university must prevent unauthorised access during the vacation period, with the option to seek police assistance if necessary.
  • A meeting at Nabanna on October 19 will take a final decision on campus security measures, including CCTV installation, with a compliance report to follow.
  • In submissions, the state argued police presence may be required because of past incidents, while the university said routine policing is undesirable but it will comply; JU has planned roughly 70 CCTV cameras with a budget near Rs 65 lakh.
