Calakmul Women's Center Opens; Indigenous Groups Demand Governor's Apology

It provides round-the-clock legal, psychological and social services to 84 communities as a model for a nationwide network.

Overview

  • President Claudia Sheinbaum inaugurated the Centro Libre para las Mujeres in Xpujil, Calakmul, which is now fully operational with a multidisciplinary team available 24 hours a day to support women in 84 communities.
  • The administration printed millions of Cartilla de las Mujeres copies and will translate them into indigenous languages to advance rights education and involve men in cultural transformation.
  • Federal authorities pledged to replicate this support center model across all municipalities and to hold 600 citizen assemblies to gather local proposals on combating gender violence.
  • During the inauguration, Campeche governor Layda Sansores said that “being a poor indigenous woman is the worst thing that can happen,” prompting condemnation for its racist and classist tone.
  • The Red Nacional de Abogadas Indígenas (RAI-MX) demanded a public apology from Sansores and mandatory anti-racism training, making political accountability a parallel focus alongside operational expansion.
