Caixa Workers Begin Nationwide Indefinite Strike

Unions rejected the bank’s ACT over Saúde Caixa, pay and workplace demands and have ordered staff to hold the strike until any new proposal is ratified by local assemblies.

Overview

  • The strike began on Thursday, September 10, 2026, after union assemblies nationwide overwhelmingly rejected Caixa’s proposed Acordo Coletivo de Trabalho (ACT).
  • Hundreds of Caixa branches are closed across many states with in-person services suspended while ATMs, the Caixa app, internet banking, Banco24Horas, lotéricas and correspondents remain available.
  • Unions cited proposed changes to Saúde Caixa, insufficient wage adjustments and abusive targets or workload as the main reasons for rejection and instructed members to maintain the walkout until concrete concessions are submitted to votes.
  • A separate national CCT negotiated with Fenaban was signed on September 9 and gives an INPC-based adjustment plus 0.6% real gain, but that agreement does not settle Caixa’s bank-specific ACT and other demands.
  • Caixa and union negotiators have returned to the table with the bank promising new proposals and unions saying the strike will continue until those offers are presented and approved in local assemblies; customers and social-program beneficiaries should expect ongoing disruption to in-person services.
