CAIT Survey Estimates Record Rs 6.05 Lakh Crore Diwali Sales, Led by Traditional Retail

A nationwide CAIT survey attributes the jump to recent GST rate cuts.

Overview

  • CAIT estimates Rs 5.40 lakh crore from goods and about Rs 65,000 crore from services during the Navratri-to-Diwali period.
  • The total is roughly 25% higher than 2024’s festive turnover of Rs 4.25 lakh crore, based on the survey findings.
  • About 85% of spending went through non-corporate, brick-and-mortar sellers spanning state capitals and Tier 2/3 cities.
  • Roughly 72% of surveyed traders credited reduced GST rates on key consumer categories for higher sales volumes.
  • The survey estimates around 50 lakh temporary jobs and indicates rural and semi-urban regions contributed about 28% of sales.
