Cairns Declares Measles Outbreak Linked to Bali Travel

Officials are tracing hundreds of contacts after exposures at a hostel, a restaurant, a GP clinic in the city.

Overview

  • Queensland Health named Mad Monkey Waterfront hostel (September 6–10), Rufus Restaurant (September 6, 3pm–10.30pm) and Cairns GP Superclinic (September 10, 11.30am–12pm) as exposure sites.
  • The latest case is an unvaccinated close contact of a Bali-linked patient, and authorities expect more infections in the outbreak.
  • Cairns Public Health Unit estimates a couple of hundred close contacts are being followed, with advice to monitor for fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes and a blotchy rash.
  • Travellers to South‑East Asia, including Bali, are urged to check their measles immunity and receive two MMR doses for strong protection.
  • A separate Townsville case in a recent overseas traveller is not linked to the Cairns cluster, with exposure alerts for the CBD, Castletown Shopping Centre and the Strand.
