Cabrales Auction Sets €37,000 Record as El Llagar de Colloto Wins Again

The annual contest logged a fifth Guinness recognition for the recurring buyer–producer pairing with 15% pledged to Asociación Galbán.

Overview

  • Restaurateur Iván Suárez of El Llagar de Colloto paid €37,000 for the top wheel at the 53rd Certamen Queso Cabrales in Arenas de Cabrales.
  • The winning cheese came from Quesería Ángel Díaz Herrero, with cheesemaker Encarnación Bada repeating last year's victory.
  • This new mark tops the 2024 record by €1,000 and extends a yearslong run of headline bids by the same buyer.
  • Suárez briefly dropped the cheese on stage after the sale, then retrieved it and posed for photos.
  • The piece weighed just over two kilograms, was made from cow's milk, and matured since December in the Los Mazos cave at about 1,500 meters, with nine restaurants bidding in the final auction.
