CableMod Recalls 16-Pin Adapters for Nvidia GPUs Over Overheating and Melting Concerns
Despite improvements in the new v1.1 power adapter, problems persist, leading to an average of 100 burnt RTX 4090 GPUs reported monthly.
- CableMod has issued a safety recall for its 90-degree and 180-degree 16-pin adapters (ver 1.0 and 1.1) designed for Nvidia's GPUs due to reports of overheating and melting.
- CableMod's new v1.1 power adapter, which was said to comply with PCI SIG CEM 5.1 specification and include an improved friction fit, is also part of the recall.
- Before the recall, CableMod offered to repair affected GPUs whose RMA was refused because of their adapters, sending them to the repair shop NorthridgeFix.
- Repair firm NorthridgeFix reported receiving an average of 100 burnt RTX 4090 GPUs monthly, often caused by adapters or cables, with the poorly designed 12VHPWR being the root cause.
- Users are advised to stop using these adapters immediately and stick to the adapters and cables provided by the GPU manufacturer.
