Cabinet Clears Expansion of Medical Seats, Raises Per-Seat Cap, Approves CSIR Training Outlay

The move aims to expand specialist training by funding upgrades to existing government institutions.

Overview

  • Phase-III of the centrally sponsored scheme was approved to strengthen and upgrade government medical colleges for 5,000 additional postgraduate seats.
  • An extension to the upgradation scheme will add 5,023 MBBS seats with an enhanced cost ceiling of ₹1.50 crore per seat.
  • The two seat-expansion schemes carry a total financial implication of ₹15,034.50 crore for 2025–26 to 2028–29, including a ₹10,303.20 crore central share and a ₹4,731.30 crore state share.
  • The Cabinet also cleared the CSIR scheme “Capacity Building and Human Resource Development” with an outlay of over ₹2,277 crore for 2021–22 to 2025–26.
  • Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the decisions after a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with an official note stating the measures will augment capacity and enable new specialties across government institutions.
