Guwahati to Get New IIM with ₹500 Crore Funding

Overview

  • The Union Cabinet has sanctioned a Rs 500-crore plan to establish IIM Guwahati after an 18-month push by Assam’s leadership.
  • Set to become the Northeast’s second IIM and India’s 22nd, the institute will join Guwahati’s existing flagship central educational institutions.
  • A 76.83-hectare plot at Marabhita village near Guwahati has been earmarked for the permanent campus.
  • IIM Ahmedabad has been appointed mentor institute to prepare the detailed project report in coordination with Assam’s higher education department.
  • Assam will provide a temporary campus to start classes this year, and a Bill to formalize the institute is slated for introduction in Parliament later this month.
