Overview
- The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved the 2027-28 minimum support prices on Wednesday, raising rates for safflower, rapeseed/mustard, lentil (masur), barley, gram and wheat.
- Safflower received the largest absolute rise of Rs 675 to Rs 7,215 per quintal and rapeseed/mustard was up Rs 413 to Rs 6,613, while wheat saw a small Rs 25 increase to Rs 2,610 per quintal.
- The government authorised procurement of 324 lakh tonnes for the marketing year and estimated a total payout of Rs 90,962 crore for MSP purchases.
- Officials framed the hikes as a policy to ensure remunerative returns and steer farmers toward less water‑intensive pulses and oilseeds, with a stated guarantee of at least 50% margin over cost for each crop.
- High FCI wheat stocks from last season limited the scope for a larger wheat MSP rise, and the MSP decision was announced together with major non‑farm approvals including the Green Energy Corridor Phase‑III and a Delhi traffic system upgrade.
