Some trains are being forced to run at 40mph instead of 85mph

Overview

  • Network Rail imposed new speed restrictions on C2C from Monday, lengthening journeys and causing some trains to start or terminate early.
  • South Western Railway is running a reduced two-hourly Waterloo–Exeter service, with 40mph limits on sections and about an extra hour between Templecombe and Exeter.
  • Journeys between London Waterloo and Yeovil Junction are about 25 minutes longer between Tisbury and Yeovil Junction due to the speed limits.
  • The Met Office reports the UK is on track for one of its warmest summers on record after an exceptionally dry spring, drying and shrinking clay soils beneath tracks.
  • Network Rail says safety measures will remain until conditions improve, noting 12,600 tonnes of ballast were laid on the C2C route and warning of risks on Maidstone East–Ashford, Tonbridge–Hastings, and FavershamWhitstable.
