Overview
- The families of David and Douglas Gresham issued a statement this week saying they are “thrilled” to be working with director Greta Gerwig and the production team on Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew.
- The C. S. Lewis Company also released an official statement praising Gerwig’s embrace of Lewis’s world, directly contradicting public claims that Lewis’s heirs are united in opposition.
- Greta Gerwig told Empire she chose Meryl Streep to voice Aslan because she wanted an actor with gravitas, lived wisdom and the ability to convey wonder, and she is staging the film as a music-inflected 'rock opera.'
- The casting of a woman as Aslan has provoked strong online and conservative criticism focused on theological concerns about Aslan’s traditional Christlike reading, with critics calling the choice unacceptable.
- Netflix plans an IMAX/ theatrical opening on February 12, 2027 followed by streaming on April 2, 2027, and industry observers say box office and audience response during that theatrical window will shape whether Netflix proceeds with more Narnia projects.
