Overview
- Around 4:15 p.m. on August 7, bystanders rescued a 30-year-old mother and her 14-year-old daughter from distress in Lake Michigan at Illinois Beach State Park.
- The mother was submerged for five minutes and was revived with CPR before being transported to a local hospital in critical condition.
- The daughter inhaled water but stayed afloat and was also taken to a hospital for evaluation.
- The Illinois Department of Natural Resources has opened an investigation into the incident following four drownings and numerous rescues at the park over the past year.
- Lake County Sheriff deputies and Beach Park Fire Department crews responded to the call amid growing worries about sudden drop-offs, cold-water shock and gaps in lifeguard coverage along the Lake Michigan shoreline.
