ByHeart Recalls Two Lots of Baby Formula Linked to 13 Infant Botulism Hospitalizations in 10 States

Officials are testing leftover product to pinpoint where contamination occurred.

Overview

  • ByHeart’s voluntary recall on Nov. 8 covers Whole Nutrition powdered infant formula lots 206VABP/251261P2 and 206VABP/251131P2 with a use-by date of Dec. 1, 2026.
  • Cases have been reported in Arizona, California, Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas and Washington, with all 13 infants hospitalized and no deaths reported.
  • Caregivers are urged to stop using the recalled lots, record the lot number if possible, discard or return the product, and wash any items and surfaces that contacted the formula.
  • Parents should seek immediate medical care for symptoms such as poor feeding, loss of head control, difficulty swallowing or decreased facial expression; clinicians are advised to consider BabyBIG for suspected cases without waiting for lab confirmation.
  • FDA, CDC, state labs and the company report no detection of C. botulinum in tested samples to date, and the recalled product accounts for about 1% of U.S. formula sales, so no national shortage is expected.
