BYD’s Sales Fall for Fifth Month as It Cuts 2026 Export Goal

A 30.1% January sales drop reflects weakening plug-in hybrid demand.

Overview

  • BYD sold 210,051 vehicles in January, down 30.1% year on year, with 100,482 units exported.
  • Production declined 29.1% from a year earlier, extending a downturn that began in July 2025.
  • Plug-in hybrid volumes fell 28.5% in January, and these models still make up more than half of BYD’s sales mix.
  • Management set a 2026 overseas shipment target of 1.3 million vehicles, reduced from prior guidance of up to 1.6 million, and has not issued a total sales goal for the year.
  • BYD is expanding manufacturing outside China, with a Hungary EV plant expected online this year and additional capacity planned in Indonesia and Turkey alongside operations in Brazil and Thailand, as subsidy rollbacks and tough budget-segment competition pressure the domestic market.
