BYD Unveils Racco Kei EV in Tokyo, Targets 2026 Japan Launch

The four-seat microcar is BYD’s first model tailored for Japan’s kei class, signaling a cost-focused play for a core slice of the market.

Overview

  • Shown as a prototype at the Japan Mobility Show, the Racco is sized to kei limits at 3,395 mm by 1,475 mm by 1,800 mm with sliding rear doors and seating for four.
  • BYD has not released full specifications, but reports point to Blade LFP batteries in short- and long-range versions, with a likely 20 kWh pack targeting about 180 km WLTC.
  • Pre-orders are planned for summer 2026 with sales expected to begin in mid-2026, while final pricing and detailed technical data remain unconfirmed.
  • Positioned against Nissan’s Sakura, Mitsubishi’s eK X EV and Honda’s kei EVs, the Racco aims at a segment that accounts for roughly one-third to 40% of Japan’s new-car sales.
  • BYD also showcased the Japan-focused Sealion 6 DM-i plug-in hybrid and debuted the T35 electric kei truck, reinforcing an “EV + PHEV” strategy as it expands its dealer network.
