BYD Unveils RACCO Kei EV in Tokyo, Targeting Summer 2026 Sales

The Japan-only micro EV signals BYD’s bet that a kei-class entry can unlock growth in Japan.

Overview

  • BYD revealed the RACCO at the Japan Mobility Show as its first kei-class EV designed specifically for Japan, with official dimensions of 3,395 mm by 1,475 mm by 1,800 mm and seating for up to four.
  • The prototype features BYD’s LFP Blade battery with short- and long-range grades; media reports point to a roughly 20 kWh pack delivering about 180 km WLTC and DC fast charging up to 100 kW.
  • Sales are planned to begin in summer 2026, with pricing estimated around ¥2.5–2.6 million before subsidies to compete with models such as Nissan’s Sakura, Mitsubishi’s eK X EV and Honda’s N-One e:.
  • BYD framed the debut within a broader Japan push that adds the SEALION 6 DM-i plug-in hybrid and commercial models including the T35 electric truck, and it aims to expand retail coverage to all 47 prefectures by the end of next year.
  • Coverage reports the RACCO will be built in China and initially sold only in Japan, as officials and industry insiders warn of tougher competition even as national EV incentives for BYD buyers have fallen to about ¥350,000.
