BYD Tops Tesla in Europe as Electrified Vehicles Dominate July Registrations

Europe's carmakers say the 2035 zero-emission target is no longer feasible.

Overview

  • New-car registrations across the EU, UK and EFTA rose 5.9% in July to 1.09 million, according to ACEA.
  • BYD’s sales jumped 225% to a 1.2% market share, surpassing Tesla’s 0.8% after a 40.2% slide in Tesla registrations.
  • Electrified powertrains reached 59.8% of EU registrations, with battery electric, hybrids and plug-in hybrids all posting double-digit gains.
  • Country performance diverged as Germany rose 11.1% while the UK fell 5.0%, France 7.7% and Italy 5.1%.
  • Brand results were mixed, with Volkswagen up 11.6% and Renault up 8.8% as Stellantis dipped 1.1%.
