BYD Tops Tesla in EU for Second Month as Electrified Sales Surge

ACEA data show rising electrified sales with BEVs still below regulatory paths.

  • BYD’s EU sales jumped 201.3% in August to about 1.3% share, edging Tesla at 1.2% as Tesla registrations fell 36.6%, according to ACEA.
  • Electrified powertrains captured 62.2% of EU August registrations, with battery-electric up 30.2%, hybrids up 54.5% and plug-in hybrids up 14.1%.
  • From January to August, BEVs accounted for 15.8% of EU registrations, below the cited 18% interim benchmark on the path to a 25% target by 2027.
  • Stellantis returned to growth with EU registrations up 2.2% in August, alongside gains at Volkswagen (4.8%) and Renault (7.8%).
  • Carmakers increased plug-in hybrid sales to meet emissions rules with more profitable models, and Chinese brands used PHEVs to mitigate tariffs and win wary buyers.
