BVG Says Reliability Climbs to 97% as Fleet Renewal Gains Pace

The operator pursues a Stability Before Growth course to hit a 99% target through new trains, higher spending, and intensified hiring.

Overview

  • System reliability has risen to about 97% in Q4 with some weeks at 98%, short of the 99% goal; bus performance meets the target on a reduced timetable and spring strike effects were excluded from the figures.
  • New JK U-Bahn trains on the U2 since September are credited with the gains, with BVG planning a return to a four‑minute U2 schedule in mid‑January and longer trains on the U3 from December.
  • The first broad‑profile J‑series trains are now slated to enter service in spring 2026, starting on the U5, with staff training set to begin in December and a total of 236 cars delivered into early 2027.
  • BVG says 2025 investment has risen about 60% to €590 million for vehicles and infrastructure, and it highlights CBTC train control as a potential 20% capacity boost for the U‑Bahn.
  • Around 270 new electric articulated buses are planned for 2026–27 and 20 Urbanliner trams for 2026, but delayed depots and prior funding cuts have pushed back full bus electrification, while hiring accelerates toward roughly 1,500 new employees this year and a fresh labor round on working conditions is due next year.
