Overview
- BVG has completed test runs of JK prototypes and expects to begin U2 service in September 2025 after six months of trials and driver training.
- Evaluations of the larger J train series are ongoing with entry into service planned for summer 2026 and driver training set to start early next year.
- A total of 484 new cars—140 small-profile JK units and 344 large-profile J units—are due for delivery by 2027 under a Stadler contract.
- The new trains offer quieter operation, enhanced ventilation, wider doors and sidewall display screens but do not include air conditioning.
- Berlin’s existing U-bahn fleet continues to suffer frequent delays and cancellations and the BVG aims to raise punctuality from about 95 percent to 99 percent.
