Business Groups Urge Mexico to Counter U.S. Travel Alert That Flags Terrorism Risk

Private leaders seek an international campaign to blunt the advisory’s terrorism label.

Overview

  • The U.S. State Department’s Aug. 12 update keeps Guerrero at Level 4 “Do not travel” and bars U.S. government personnel from any part of the state, including Acapulco, Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo and Taxco.
  • For Mexico, the advisory added a terrorism indicator for the first time, reflecting Washington’s treatment of some cartels as terrorist organizations.
  • Coparmex and the CNET demanded an immediate, data-backed international communications and crisis-management push to protect tourism and investment; as of Aug. 18–19, no nationwide counter-campaign has been announced.
  • The groups also urged coordinated security operations, investment in surveillance infrastructure and stronger rule-of-law enforcement to reassure residents and visitors.
  • Hoteliers in Guerrero warn of likely booking declines despite recent summer occupancy near 80%, while business groups note tourism’s 2.5-trillion-peso GDP and 4.9 million jobs at stake.
