Bushfire Destroys Home and Threatens Communities East of Perth

A fast-moving fire has burned over 726 hectares, damaging property and infrastructure as firefighters work to protect lives and critical facilities.

The bushfire began on New Year’s Day near Great Eastern Highway and has burned through 726 hectares across The Lakes, Wooroloo, and Woottating.
One home and several buildings, including sheds and agricultural infrastructure, have been destroyed, with aerial footage showing widespread damage.
The fire came dangerously close to Acacia Prison, but authorities have declared the facility safe and defendable with firefighting crews stationed on-site.
An evacuation center has been set up at Northam Recreation Centre, and residents in affected areas have been urged to leave if it is safe to do so.
The fire has been downgraded to a Watch and Act alert due to improved weather conditions, but authorities continue to investigate its cause.
