Bus Plunge in Southern Peru Kills 37 as Prosecutors Seek 7-Day Detention for Pickup Driver

Prosecutors have requested seven-day flagrancia detention pending new forensic alcohol analyses.

Overview

  • Authorities say a Llamosas interprovincial bus fell roughly 200 meters at the Ocoña descent near km 780 of the Panamericana Sur, leaving 37 dead and about 25 injured.
  • Pickup driver Henry Bandi Rey Apaclla Ñaupari, 35, remains in custody as he is investigated for alleged aggravated negligent homicide and culpable injuries.
  • An initial qualitative alcohol screen for the driver was positive, but later quantitative results measured 0.25 g/l (PNP) and 0.11 g/l (Fiscalía), both below the 0.50 g/l legal limit after samples were taken hours after the crash.
  • Prosecutors ordered complementary and retrospective testing, and police transit reports and vehicle forensics are pending to establish responsibility for the collision.
  • The Institute of Legal Medicine has identified all 37 victims and has delivered most remains to families, while survivors are being treated in hospitals in Camaná and Arequipa.
