Bus Driver Puts Young Storks on Diet Before Southward Migration

Cutting juveniles’ rations encourages self-sufficient foraging, boosting their readiness for the southward journey.

Overview

  • Over the past four decades, Jörg Spörl has rescued and rehabilitated more than 100 injured or orphaned white storks in the Geithain region.
  • In his capacity as Storchenbeauftragter for the Geithain region in Landkreis Leipzig, he combines wildlife stewardship with his daily work as a regional bus driver.
  • This season he is nurturing about six juvenile storks, feeding them 500–700 grams daily of mice and chicks provided by a nearby Ökostation.
  • Now, days before release, he is gradually loosening their rations to spur independent foraging and prevent excess weight on migration.
  • Once fully weaned, the young storks will be released for their southward journey toward their annual wintering grounds.
