Bury Cousins Jailed for ‘Campaign of Rape’ Against Five Girls in the 1990s

A 2019 disclosure enabled investigators to assemble corroborating records, securing unanimous verdicts decades after the abuse.

Overview

  • Manzorr Hussain, 54, was sentenced to 30 years for seven rapes and seven indecent assaults, while Imtiaz Ali, 53, received 28 years for five rapes, five indecent assaults and one attempted indecent assault.
  • The offences were committed between 1996 and 1999 against five girls aged 13 to 16.
  • The men groomed vulnerable teenagers with alcohol, drugs, lifts and attention before assaults in homes, vehicles and a hotel across Bury, Greater Manchester and parts of Wales.
  • Judge Bernadette Baxter said they showed no remorse and described the offending as a “campaign of rape,” ordering they serve two-thirds of their terms in custody with lifetime sex offender notification.
  • Police built the case after one survivor came forward in 2019, corroborating accounts with social care and school records, while a third charged man has left the country and has not been tried.
