Burundi Accuses Rwanda of Supporting Rebel Attacks

President Ndayishimiye alleges Rwanda funds and trains RED-Tabara rebels, who recently attacked Gatumba village near Congo border.

  • Burundi's President Evariste Ndayishimiye accuses Rwanda of funding and training the RED-Tabara rebel group, which is based in South Kivu, eastern Congo.
  • RED-Tabara claimed responsibility for a recent attack on the village of Gatumba, near Burundi's border with Congo, killing at least 20 people.
  • Burundi has been unsuccessfully negotiating with Rwanda for two years, seeking the extradition of the rebels.
  • Rwanda has previously stated it cannot extradite people who are under the protection of the U.N. refugee agency.
  • The East African Regional force, which includes Burundi troops, is currently being withdrawn in phases from eastern Congo following complaints that instead of disarming the rebels, the forces were cohabiting with them.
