Overview
- The new Burnham government, which took office Wednesday, will inherit the current Winter Fuel Payment rules and is not expected to change them for winter 2026–27.
- All state pensioners will receive automatic Winter Fuel Payments, but anyone with annual income above £35,000 will have the money reclaimed by HMRC through tax or instalments.
- Most qualifying pensioners aged under 80 will be paid £200 and those aged 80 or over will be paid £300.
- Eligibility for the 2026–27 payment is set by a government qualifying week of 21–27 September 2026 and formal claims for that season open on 21 September 2026.
- The current approach follows a 2024 move to means-testing that removed universal payments, and a later partial U‑turn that reinstated automatic payments while introducing the present clawback, a change that leaves roughly three million over‑65s unable to keep the money.
