• The Burgtheater laid Peymann’s coffin on the Feststiege before a procession circled the theater once.
• A black curtain draped the Feststiege gate and two fire bowls stood on tall pillars as fans, ensemble members, and invited guests paid respects.
• The body was brought from Germany to Vienna for the ritual in line with the honorary-member funeral tradition at the house.
• After the Vienna ceremony, the coffin will be transported back to Germany for burial in Berlin on Friday, according to the Burgtheater.
• Peymann, who died in July in Berlin at age 88, led the Burgtheater from 1986 to 1999 and later headed the Berliner Ensemble, which plans a matinee memorial on October 26.
