Burglar Jailed After Falling for Homeowners’ Clever Bucket Trap

Paul Howell, a prolific burglar with over 100 prior convictions, was sentenced to over three years in prison after being caught by a simple water bucket trap set by Northumberland homeowners.

  • Paul Howell, 56, attempted to break into a home in Blyth, Northumberland, on November 9, 2024, but triggered a string-tied bucket trap that spilled water and caused him to flee.
  • The homeowners, who had set the trap after a series of attempted break-ins in the area, checked their CCTV and reported the incident to police days later.
  • Howell, identified from the footage, was arrested at his home and subsequently linked to two additional burglaries in Blyth the following week.
  • During the other burglaries, Howell stole items including jewellery and bicycles, many of which were recovered during a search of his residence.
  • With 108 prior convictions, including 25 for burglary, Howell pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three years and seven months in prison at Newcastle Crown Court.
