Bundeswehr Stands Up Sixth Homeland Defense Regiment in Altengrabow

The move centralizes regional companies under a single command to strengthen domestic protection of critical infrastructure.

Overview

  • The regiment was formally established at Schlosspark Möckern and will be based in Altengrabow.
  • Existing Heimatschutz companies from Berlin, Potsdam, Magdeburg and Klietz are now subordinated to the new command.
  • With this step, the Division Heimatschutz comprises six regiments across Bavaria, North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein, Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt.
  • The units are tasked in crises to guard ports, rail lines, bridges, energy facilities and digital networks and to secure rest and transfer points for allied troop movements.
  • The structure integrates 60 companies previously under state commands to enable unified leadership, training and operational planning, and the forces can support civil aid during major accidents or natural disasters.
